POPULAR barbecue spot, Matsika Shisa Nyama, will host a celebrity event this Sunday to give patrons an opportunity to meet their sports icons.

While people in Harare are preparing for the Castle Lager National Braai Day next weekend, those in Bulawayo will have their own barbeque fun this weekend with celebrities that include former Warriors’ captain Benjani Mwaruwari and retired Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Esrom Nyandoro.

Resident DJs Sbu and Matt will provide entertainment with comedians and artistes from the city also set to grace the event.

The idea behind the celebrity event is to afford the joint’s patrons, football fans and music lovers an afternoon to mix and mingle with the stars.
Matsika Shisa Nyama manager, Danacious Mlalazi said they have invited the now retired footie stars to come and share some of his experiences with patrons at the establishment.

He said they felt compelled to invite Benjani as they wanted to thank him for the work his Benjani Mwaruwari Foundation is doing for the development of sport for children.

Mlalazi added that he had been impressed by Benjani’s commitment to give back to the same society that raised him and propelled him to super stardom.
“Benjani is a huge superstar in Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, he doesn’t live in the country so fans hardly get a chance to meet him and share his experiences.
“It’ll be great seeing him spend Sunday afternoon with patrons, most of whom are football fanatics,” said Mlalazi.

Speaking from South Africa, Mwaruwari confirmed his attendance saying he was humbled by the invitation.

“I’m humbled by the invitation which gives me a chance to mix with football fans informally. I look forward to chatting and taking pictures with football fans that’ll be there,” said Mwaruwari.

“It’s been a while since I’ve interacted with people there and also had good steak while discussing my football career.”

THE Midlands State University will today hold a Film and Theatre Festival at the Zvishavane campus where its students will showcase their artistic work, with a premiere of a film Toro – The Tribe.

During the one-day festival that is open to the public, Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN)’s Nico Abote will give a key note address to the students on how to create content.

Comedian Bhuthisi and Steward Bank will also be part of the festival and will address students how to fund their films.

One of the organisers of the festival, Stanley Chera, said the event was meant to celebrate the achievements of students in the department that was established last year.

“This is the first in many festivals that we shall hold. It’s all about celebrating the accomplishments that the students in the faculty have made in producing their artistic products.

“At the end of the day’s fete there shall be a premiere of the film Toro – The Tribe that was wholly produced by students,” said Chera.

He said the students worked hard in coming up with the movie that is about an imaginary tribe of cannibals in Zimbabwe.

“The students worked on a zero budget to produce the movie. It was shot in Zvishavane with people from the town helping out. The students were the main actors.”

Abote said as ZTN, they wanted to give a helping hand to students in coming up with productions hence why Steward Bank was roped in.

“As ZTN we have managed to rope in Steward Bank who will conduct a financial literacy talk and also empower the students on ways to finance content productions.

“We’ll also have Admire Kuzhangaira (Bhutisi) attending the festival to provide a talk on the importance of enterprising as a filmmaker and comedian,” said Abote.

Admire is a producer and director with ZTN responsible for the Pachiteshi show that is trending on the station.

As part of capacity building and investment in the film industry, Russo from Way2Nice Media Group has also granted the students an opportunity to have the best sound scoring for their productions through his studio.

When in doubt, choose black…

Yoliswa Dube

THE mirror at the end of our hallway is a great buddy of mine.

I never leave the house without consulting with her first although on tough days, she doesn’t always give me the affirmation I need.

You must be thinking I’m crazy personifying a mirror right? I’m even chuckling at myself right now. But well, it is quite helpful. A lot of the times, you visualise certain pieces together, but they don’t make any sense until you actually try them on.

Even when you do try them on, you’ll probably think you’re all that and a bag of chips until you actually stand in front of a mirror and realise you look crappy. It can be a lot. Figuring out what to wear can be a real roller coaster ride if like me; you’re serious about personal branding and care about how you look.

On days when I can’t make up my mind about what to wear from just standing in front of the mirror, I take a mirror selfie. Yes, weird, I know but it helps to take a picture and see how I appear to others. Just the other day I was having difficulties deciding what to pair my new black and beige skirt with.

I had worn a black blazer and wasn’t sure whether to wear beige or black heels. The beige shoes matched the beige on the skirt perfectly. They also did wonders for my legs, if I may say so myself. On the other hand, the black shoes looked rather too chilled for the feisty skirt, but they worked well with the black blazer.

I really wasn’t sure which pair to go with so I wore one shoe from each pair to make a more accurate comparison and take a mirror selfie. At this point, you’re pretty sure I’m out of my wits, rights?

So here I was looking at the mirror selfie and wondering which shoe looked the hottest. The clock was ticking and I was running late, but I also didn’t want to leave the house looking crappy, so I picked the black shoes. Black is always a safe option, always. It pretty much matches with everything even on days you don’t really want to look safe.

You really have got to be out of your mind to mess up any black fashion piece! Black nuetralises any over the top combinations. It will break outfits that are too colourful and help tie everything together nicely.

If you don’t already own a black blazer, top, pants and shoes — you need to get to stepping and hook yourself up! Black is also a great colour to wear on its own; all black everything is elegant. I think it’s super classy although my mother always insists I need something to break the black lest I look like a grieving widow.

There are a couple of things to remember if you’re going to go for the black on black look though. Vary the fabrics and textures. Nothing looks dowdier than an all-black outfit that is all cotton. On the fabric note, make sure the fabric selection is season appropriate. A black wool dress will look fabulous in winter but out of place during summer. Silk and linen make it easier to pull off the all-black look during the warmer months.

When putting together an all-black ensemble, fit becomes even more important. Take advantage of the fact that black is slimming and have the clothes more fitted and flattering, rather than shapeless and drab.

Accessories are a thing for me if I’m going to do black on black. Black is such a graceful colour which allows your accessories to pop and your face to glow. It’s always a good idea to add interest with accessories. Bold, colourful jewellery becomes the statement piece of your outfit. For me, coloured stiletto heels are the go-to shoe with any all black outfit. It’s also key to make your outfit more dressy or casual with the simple change of lipstick colour. A little black dress can go from day with a light pink lip stain to night with a bold, deep red lip seamlessly.

Once you invest in good blacks, you’ll realise you won’t have to spend much whenever you have an important event to attend. Just play around with your accessories and you’re good to go.

Until next week, flaunt your pattern and style and don’t forget to catch up with me on Twitter handle @Yolisswa, visit my blog, www.stayera247.blogspot.com or like my Facebook page Pattern & Style.

Minnie Dlamini, wedding planner fight over payment

TV presenter and model Minnie Dlamini and her husband Quinton Jones’ dream wedding has been soiled after their wedding planner cried foul over payments.

It is reported that Dlamini and her husband were allegedly at loggerheads with wedding planner Mizana Qata of Wellseated over a R500 000 wedding bill.

The legal dispute between the two parties is said to be informed by disagreements over payments of services rendered by Wellseated, which Dlamini was allegedly disputing saying the agreement was that they would be paid through exposure, which will be equivalent to R6-million.

So intense is the dispute that the wedding planner elevated the matter to MultiChoice, the sole rights owners of Dlamini’s wedding, to ask for their intervention.

It is understood that Dlamini was summoned to a meeting by MultiChoice executive Nkateko Mabaso to explain the impasse. Dlamini allegedly told the broadcaster the supplier was reneging on their agreement to receive payment through exposure of her business.

It is believed that Dlamini was interrogated and asked during the meeting to produce a contract she signed with Qata. Sources with intimate knowledge of the meeting revealed that Dlamini failed to produce a single document confirming that Qata had agreed to be paid in kind, leaving MultiChoice with no choice, but to advise her to pay the wedding planner what was due to her.

A payment plan was then hatched after Dlamini and her hubby allegedly pleaded poverty, sources say.

“They also asked to renegotiate the bill to a more affordable figure and said they could only raise R300 000,” said the source.

Qata confirmed they were in a payment tug-of-war with Dlamini but referred all inquiries to her lawyer Craig Green.

“We’ve addressed the matter with her lawyers, urging her to make payment arrangements,” she said.

Green of Schindlers Attorneys said the matter was now resolved and a settlement was reached.

“Our client has instructed us to advise that she has accepted a settlement offer made by Mrs Minenhle Dlamini, the terms of which our client, in good faith, prefers not to disclose,” said Green.

Dlamini’s publicist Sarit Tomlinson said: “Minnie has always acted with integrity and ethics in all her business dealings . . . The allegations are false and misleading.”

M-Net’s spokeswoman Nondumiso Mabece said the broadcaster had no involvement in the organisation of the wedding itself. — Sunday World

Genius’ Rolls Royce charms Pearl Thusi

Pearl a nd genius

South African actress Pearl Thusi found local businessman, Genius ‘Ginimbi’ Kadungure’s new set of wheels too good to resist as she fell for the car’s charm.

Thusi, who was attending the China Africa International Film Festival in Cape Town posed before the Zimbabwean’s rare Rolls Royce which was parked at the coastal city’s One & Only luxury hotel entrance, unaware of the owner.

The actress who recently split with sports personality Robert Marawa posted the picture on her Instagram account with the hash tags #ifoundthiscarthere #imanopportunist #keepingitreal. She has 1.6 million followers on the photo sharing app.

From the picture, it looks like the Quantico star was booked at the same hotel as Ginimbi and his legion of friends who also happened to be in Cape Town at that period where they were celebrating his birthday, which has become a tradition.

Earlier in the day, Ginimbi had posted a picture of the car at the exact hotel space.

The flamboyant businessman and socialite is believed to have blown away two million rand during his three-day birthday celebrations this past weekend.

It is reported that over 120 people attended the bash with over 37 rooms booked at the expensive One & Only hotel located at the Waterfront. The hotel charges $950 a night.

In addition to booking a yacht for the 120 people in attendance last Saturday, Ginimbi hosted parties on Friday and Sunday. He also shipped six cars from Johannesburg for use in Cape Town.

Said Ginimbi: “In all, there was more than R2 million spent over the weekend and this includes what other people paid on their own, but for purposes of my birthday celebrations. The direct cost to me was up to R1.2 million while the remainder was settled by the other guys who were in the delegation.

“It cost R68 000 to ship my cars to and from Cape Town. These include two Rolls Royce, two Bentleys, one G-Class and Range Rover Lumma. We flew on South African Airways and virtually took over the business class where 38 of us occupied seats while others travelled economy class.

“The warm up party on Friday cost about R400 000 and the main event was on Saturday where we partied on the yacht, which one has to pay in advance with the food on board,” said Ginimbi.

He said they had to extend the 120 guest list after those in Cape Town had been omitted.

“There’d been worries that the weather would ruin it for us but fortunately it went well. We were supposed to be 120 but then I made a mistake as I hadn’t invited those in Cape Town who were keen to be part of it.

“So, if someone said they had a beautiful girlfriend, I’d invite them for the party so we ended up exceeding the 120 figure for the party that ran between 2pm and 9pm.”

Meanwhile, Ginimbi has dismissed as fake, an email that purportedly came from him to a lady spotted on Instagram. In the email, there is an offer of US$10 000 for a night with the lady.

“That is fake. But then that is the price I pay for being who I am, a brand that is known all over the world. I’ve nothing to do with that email and I’ll not even waste my time discussing its contents instead of enjoying what went on at my three-day party”. — Online/Showbiz Reporter

Khuliyo, Sikhonjwa beef rages on

khuliyo and skhonjwa

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
SINGER Khuliyo has accused comedian and radio personality Babongile Sikhonjwa of deflating the tyres of his car, vowing to get back at him, as their rivalry escalates.

Khuliyo and Sikhonjwa have been in a war of words since last week after the comedian accused the singer of telling people that he was a bad MC, leading to the loss of potential revenue. Sikhonjwa hit back saying Khuliyo was a bad singer and declared that he was better than him.

Khuliyo also said Sikhonjwa was not good at his job as a radio presenter or MC and was a lousy singer. Thereafter Khuliyo challenged Sikhonjwa to a sing off competition next week at the Bulawayo Theatre of which he obliged.

As people were still preparing for the sing-off next Thursday, Khuliyo posted pictures of himself at a local tyre repair shop, saying he found his tyres deflated and Sikhonjwa was his prime suspect.

“So I find my car flat. I go to Pro-Line; they say some fool probably did it. I’ve no proof but this means only one thing . . . I see you Babongile,” posted Khuliyo on his social media.

Before this scenario, Sikhonjwa had tagged Khuliyo in a post that read: “Wena Nkue Nkala, before the battle next week, I need to teach you a lesson or two and show you that I’m old school. Mana ubone (wait and see).”

And now days later, Khuliyo conveniently found his tyres deflated.

Khuliyo said he was not taking the issue lightly and wanted to find ways to get Sikhonjwa arrested.

“Sikhonjwa is resorting to dirty tricks because he knows that he’s not going to win. Rather than rehearsing, he’s doing childish things like this.

“I’m going to the police to find out if I’ve grounds to press charges,” said Khuliyo yesterday.

Sikhonjwa denied having a hand in the puncturing of Khuliyo’s car tyres.

“I happened to pass by Pro-Line and took a picture of a sign there. My intention was to tell him (Khuliyo) ukuthi uzophel’umoya (that he’ll get tired).

Unfortunately, later on in the day, someone deflated his tyres,” said Sikhonjwa.

“Does he honestly think that his tyres can’t be deflated? He wants to get me arrested meaning that he knows that he can’t win against me.”

Red Café comes to town

Red Cafe4

Bruce Ndlovu
Last Friday, as the sun set and evening approached, some of Bulawayo’s top socialites started buzzing about news announcing the arrival of Red Café, a new pub in the City of Kings.

For those that have seen the opening and closure of various nightspots over the past year, the excitement did not seem warranted. After all, many joints have opened with much pomp and fanfare over the last couple of years, only to fizzle out as customers dry up.

Times are tough and in such a harsh economic climate, grand openings are quickly followed by unceremonious closures. But Red Café, which was trumpeted spiritedly by some of the city’s top socialites, is no ordinary pub.

The new joint, nestled at the site of what used to be the Old Pizzaghetti, corner George Silunduka St and 11th Avenue, signals the return to the club scene of one of Bulawayo’s pleasure managers, Babongile Sikhonjwa.

While most club goers became acquainted with a then youthful Sikhonjwa when he was the manager at Visions Night Club, it was only at Kudu Bar that he really came into his own.

When he ran the infamous joint, the club was a mirror reflection of its hard partying owner. Sikhonjwa single handedly epitomised what Kudu Bar was all about, exhibiting the sort of carefree spirit that seemed to possess everyone that walked through Hartsfield gates.

However, Kudu Bar, for all its notoriety is now dead and the man that was at the helm all those years ago is grown up now. If one expects to find the spirit of the old Kudu Bar at the recently opened Red Café, they will walk out of sleek glass doors extremely disappointed.

Red Café is a different animal altogether.

Red Cafe3

A spacious pub with a luxurious interior that maintains its red theme throughout, Red Café is paradise for revellers that want an up-market joint that has its finger on the pulse of the latest trends. When it opened its doors last week, it was welcomed by some of the city’s well to do businesspeople and socialites, who showed their respect for the occasion by pulling out some of the finest outfits from their wardrobes.

It was a night for the mature and this was not lost on Sikhonjwa, who returns to the city’s club scene a changed man. If Red Café is made for the mature reveller, the man that runs it should be a prime example of this.

“The level of maturity at this club shows that I can’t do Kudu Bar again. I’ve come a long way,” said Sikhonjwa in an interview with Saturday Leisure this week.

His drama filled stints at Visions and Kudu had prepared him for this next step in his evolution.

“I’m coming with all my experiences. All the fights that I’ve had and all the hating I’ve put all of that on my shoulders,” he said.

Despite the popularity of Kudu Bar, Sikhonjwa said he was not in a hurry to revive the spirit of the long dead joint. However, he would keep the spirit of openness that characterised the old club.

“Kudu Bar cut all the rules. This will be a different joint but we won’t put unnecessary restrictions on revellers. We won’t ask people to take off their hats or anything like that.

“We will have an open door policy. If people feel like something is not in order, they can come and notify me. I’ll always give revellers an ear because they’re the ones that know when something is not right,” he said.

The multi-talented radio personality, MC and comedian said that even with his popularity, he was surprised at how fast news of the joint’s opening spread.

“There was a myth that this joint was never going to open. We bashed that myth on Friday night. What worked in our favour last week was that most of the people that came had already been inside the joint before it officially opened,” he said.

At the core of the joint’s identity will be the music it plays. Instead of feeding revellers an uninterrupted diet of chart topping commercial house tunes, Red Café will try to cater for the sophisticated music listener, particularly those that love house music.

“We want to play discerning music. People are being subjected to too much commercial stuff. You go to the pub you hear one kind of music and then you go to the club and you hear the same kind of music.

“We want people to know they can come to the joint and hear discerning music. Why do we have so much fun when we’re in Johannesburg? Why can’t we have that sort of fun at home? So basically we want to bring that element that you get at those South African clubs and put a Bulawayo flavour to it,” he said.

Sikhonjwa said the joint had recruited DJs from the popular Sunday house music movement, who played delightful deep house cuts, albeit in an environment that some did not feel secure or comfortable in.

“As Ballers League, we never used to play commercial house for more than 30 minutes. You go to a joint in South Africa and you enjoy but, they’re playing songs that you don’t know.

“So the DJs that will play here will know that on Friday and Saturday we play nothing but deep house,” he said.

However, Red Café’s attention will not only be on the music or wise waters but food lovers will also be encouraged to sample some of the joint’s cuisine.

“A full menu will be available as from Monday next week. We want to secure a deal that will see Highlanders and other Bulawayo teams have their press conferences at Red Café. The same goes for journalists, the Bulawayo Press Club should be having its meetings at Red Café,” said Sikhonjwa.

After 12 years apart, South African Kwaito pioneers Bongo Maffin are set to bring back the magic as the three-member group has finally decided to bury the hatchet and reunite, thanks to a Castle lager commercial which brought them together.

Made up of lead Singer Thandiswa Mazwai, Stoane Motswako Saote and the Mbare bred, Anesu ‘Appleseed’ Mupembi, the Kura Uone hit-makers decided to let go of whatever separated them and focus on the future.

The cause for separation of the group was due to differences between Thandiswa and Appleseed who did not see eye to eye when it came to decision making.

The group was this year approached to do a commercial advertisement for Castle Lager, which made them think of re-uniting and do away with their differences for the love of music.

“It’s true the group separated because of the feud between me and Thandiswa but that is the past. After we were approached to do a commercial for Castle Lager, we saw it fit to appreciate our differences and re-unite because our fans need us,” said Appleseed.

The dreadlocked chanter who always puts a Zimbabwean flavour to the group’s songs, stated that they were now working on singles which fans should expect before the end of the year.

“We don’t promise an album soon but we’re busy producing singles at the studio. Fans should expect something before the end of the year,”, said the chanter.

Bongo Maffin which was formed in 1996 boasts of five albums with several awards including a South African Music Award which they won for their album Thath’Isgubhu.

DJ Tamuka faces moment of truth

DJ Tamuka

Langalakhe Mabena
After splitting from childhood friend Oskid last year, many assumed the road ahead would be difficult for producer Mponda “DJ Tamuka” Makhuluni as the two seemed heavily dependent on each other.

When they released their breakthrough hit Tipeiwo hwahwa featuring Bulawayo poet Khoikhoi while they were still based in their home town of Gweru in 2014, many thought the two birds of a feather would flock together and soar towards stardom as a duo.

The pair soon after the release of the debut song, moved to Harare in search for greener pastures and they were signed under Kenako Music Records which brought a different flavour to the local music scene when they produced hits for artistes like Dobba Don of the Mudendere fame.

The raw talent possessed by the two producers attracted Winky D who asked DJ Oskid to produce his multi award winning album Gafa Life. That breakthrough for Oskid led to their break-up.

“We’d been signed under Kenako Music with Oskid and in 2014, we decided to go separate ways when he made a deal to produce Winky D’s album. I was very proud of him because we are friends and I regarded his achievements as mine”, said Tamuka in an interview.

While Oskid was making waves as an independent producer, it took three years for DJ Tamuka to strike the right chord with the country’s musicians. His breakthrough was to come courtesy of Jah Prayzah who approached the producer and made him a part of his star-studded Military Touch Movement record label.

Producing hits like Nhema for ExQ featuring Killer T and Ammara Brown’s Akiliz among many other singles, Tamuka proved his worth, showing he was a force to reckon with. However, his crowning moment has been his work with Jah Prayzah who successfully launched his much anticipated Kutonga Kwaro album early this month in Harare.

With fans and critics raving about the project, Tamuka is feeling on top of the world.

“I’m glad that the album was successfully launched. With me producing the entire album, I am delighted that the Military Touch family did its best to give people good music from the production stage up to the launch,” said Tamuka.

Asked about his solo projects, the soft-spoken beat master vowed to release an album early next year with production already in progress. He explained that his ambitions were grounded on the album, as he aims to take over Africa with his first solo offering that will feature some of Africa’s talented artistes that include the If hit maker Davido.

The father of one said he gives credit to God and his family who taught him to believe in himself and be patient.

“After working with different artistes in Zimbabwe including the Military Touch family, I’ve decided to do my first solo album which is due early next year. Producing for the likes of Jah Prayzah makes me believe that I’ve achieved what I wanted to do in Zimbabwe and it’s time I take over Africa. One of the artistes I have since engaged is Davido”, said Tamuka.

Turning to his friend Oskid, Tamuka slammed rumours that things were not well between the two producers insisting that they are still in good books.

“Oskid is my friend and he produces for Winky D while I produce for Jah Prayzah,” he said.

Pamela “Gonyeti” Zulu

Pamela “Gonyeti” Zulu

Whinsley Masara, Showbiz Correspondent
EXACTLY one year after leaving Jah Prayzah’s Third Generation band claiming she was sexually abused, Gonyeti is finding the going tough as a solo artiste.

Gonyeti, real name Pamela Zulu used to be Third Generation backing vocalist.

In an interview Gonyeti said the music industry was difficult to penetrate but was hopeful things will work out in future.

She said it was hard to get bookings and this was frustrating given the time they spend rehearsing.

Gonyeti thanked her band members for being patient saying sometimes they can go for close to a month without bookings.

“I thank the Lord I have an understanding team that appreciates that people can only be paid when they have done some work. They know when we work, I pay them well on time,” she said.

Gonyeti who launched her debut album as a solo artiste last year at an event that was well attended, has failed to endear herself to promoters.

A few spots like Veritas Night Club at Westlea Shopping Centre and Time End Jazz Club both in Harare have however been supporting her from time to time.

What is surprising is that despite the fact that she is a crowd puller as evidenced by the many people that attend her shows, promoters still shun her.

Gonyeti with her band, Horse Power last month released two music videos  for the songs Musha Mukadzi and Life Yacho.

The songs will be featured on her forthcoming album titled Madhingadhingali.

Gonyeti who hogged the limelight last year following sexual abuse claims against high riding contemporary musician – Jah Prayzah, said the incident adversely affected her career but had since moved on.

The 31-year-old mother of one said although she misses the Third Generation Band, she is content with her decision to go solo and will not be considering rejoining the band.

Her manager – Filda Muchabaiwa who also managed Jah Prayzah at some point, said Zulu’s band was struggling to cope because of the economy and lack of equipment.

“If we had our own PA systems and other equipment, I’m sure we could be in a better position,” said Muchabaiwa.

Ster-Kinekor

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
ANOTHER night of glitz and glamour at Ster Kinekor in Bulawayo is on the cards as movie goers will rub shoulders with about 20 local celebrities before watching the premiere of superhero film Thor: Ragnarok on Friday night.

The Bulawayo public seems to be embracing the new movie house which has had brisk business ever since it opened doors last month.

To add excitement to the movie premiere, local celebrities including Arthur Evans, rapper Cal Vin and Afro pop musician Mzoe 7 are expected to mix and mingle with movie goers while dressed to the nines.

Tickets are already on sale at the movie house situated on the Bulawayo Centre first floor. Doors will open at 6PM and on the red carpet, people will be afforded an opportunity to take photos with the personalities.

The movie will be shown as from 7PM in two 3D Cinemas.

Said Ster Kinekor spokesperson Maybe Simbisai: “We want people from Bulawayo to have an opportunity to watch movies with their local celebrities. It’s just another chance for us to treat the people of Bulawayo to great entertainment.”

She thanked Bulawayo residents for supporting them.

“Attendance at the movie house has been good ever since we opened last month. The busiest days are Tuesdays when patrons pay half price and Friday likely because it’s a weekend. But no day beats Saturday.

“Themed nights such as Girlfriends Getaway on Thursday are also proving popular.”

She said children and couples are their biggest customers.

“Most of the people who come to watch movies are couples. The kids are also coming in their numbers to watch movies like Emoji while adults enjoy Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

“We expect another animation movie The Jungle Gang to be popular with mostly primary and pre-school children,” said Simbisai.

About the movie, Thor: Ragnarok, Simbisai said it is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

The film is directed by Taika Waititi with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost.

It stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor must defeat the Hulk in a gladiatorial duel in time to save Asgard from Hela and the coming Ragnarok.

Jah Prayzah at the launch of his album in Harare recently

Jah Prayzah at the launch of his album in Harare recently

Walter Mswazie in Masvingo
TALENTED Harare-based artiste, Jah Prayzah’s latest offering, Kutonga Kwaro, has been overwhelmingly welcomed by music fans in Masvingo.

But, worrying is the level at which the album has been pirated because of its scarcity. Before the official launch of the album in Harare two weeks ago, some of the new songs were already being played in commuter omnibuses and pirate taxis. Some people were also sharing the songs on their smart phones, depicting the worst levels of piracy in the country.

But, the impact that the album has had on the ancient city is commendable as it shows that Jah Prayzah is now a household name in the music industry.

A survey by Chronicle Showbiz revealed that almost every vehicle, corner, bar, shop, hair salon is playing the dread-locked artiste’s new songs.

A disc vendor, Albert Nago, hailed Jah Prayzah for his effort and described him as a fine singer whose music is improving with each album.

“I think Jah Prayzah is the man of the moment. His latest offering, Kutonga Kwaro is a hit and the album is selling like hot cakes,” said Nago.

He said the original discs were in short supply, something that has forced most vendors to sell pirated discs.

“I received a few original discs last week and fans quickly grabbed the copies. I’m selling the original discs for $5, but I no longer have any in stock.

However, those selling pirated ones are trading them at $1 each.

“I think Jah Prayzah has to flood the market, to, at least try and beat piracy,” Nago said.

The album has songs that include Ndin’ndamubata – a party song, Chengetedza, Emerina and Muchinjiko – a gospel track.

Sadly, some critics have unfortunately twisted some songs on the album such as the title track – Kutonga Kwaro – to suit their political preferences, suggesting that the talented artiste has gone political, allegations which he has vehemently denied.

IN the latest instalment of their feud, comedian MC Babongile Sikhonjwa booted musician, Khuliyo, out of his Red Cafe establishment at the weekend.

Khuliyo and Sikhonjwa have been embroiled in a war of words since last week after the comedian accused the singer of telling people that he was a bad MC.

Sikhonjwa hit back saying Khuliyo was a bad singer and declared that he was better than him. A sing off competition was then arranged at the Bulawayo Theatre this Friday to prove who the better artiste is.

As people were preparing for the competition, the two gave them more reason to look forward to the event as they publicly embarrassed each other at the cafe. An unsuspecting Khuliyo had visited the cafe to have a feel of the place with the hope of adopting it as his new watering hole. As the speakers were pumping house beats with the crowd grooving, Khuliyo spotted blogger Larry Kwirirayi in the crowd and went over to greet him. As they were conversing, Sikhonjwa, who was greeting patrons and friends, spotted Khuliyo in the crowd.

The smile/grin on his face quickly turned into a scowl as he asked what Khuliyo was doing in his bar. Thereafter, Sikhonjwa fleet-footedly rushed to the door and instructed the security personnel to throw Khuliyo out.

Those who noticed watched excitedly, some with concern as they feared the scuffle would turn nasty. The bouncer adhered to his boss’s command and nudged Khuliyo to the door, where Sikhonjwa was standing.

When they got to the door, Khuliyo confronted Sikhonjwa and some unpalatable words were exchanged before Khuliyo left the spot.

An angry Khuliyo said he would get back at Sikhonjwa adding that he was saving his energy for Friday.

“I’m working hard on rehearsing for Friday’s sing off competition and don’t want to dwell on a misguided person. While he’s busy playing around and throwing people out of his bar, I’m working towards beating him on Friday,” said Khuliyo.

Asked about the cafe incident, Sikhonjwa simply said he did not want Khuliyo in his space.

“As the sign says ‘right of admission is reserved’,” said Sikhonjwa.

SOUND Track Entertainment, a local music production company in partnership with several up-and-coming artistes, will this Saturday host a fundraising gig for Qinisani Orphanage, which has been adversely affected by donor fatigue.

Qinisani Orphanage, which is in Nkulumane 12, assists orphans and underprivileged children. It is facing financial constraints as most of its donors have pulled out sighting lack of funds, something that has prompted Sound Track Entertainment to chip in.

One of the organisers of the event, Leroy Zulu, said the concert had been dubbed “My purpose, my choice”.

“The main thrust of the show is to raise funds for the orphanage which we noticed is going through a tough time. In the past several donors supported the orphanage financially but things have changed now,” said Zulu.

He said the worst affected were girls who were  struggling to get basics such as food, clothes and even sanitary wear.

The entrance tickets to the show have been pegged at a $1 for adults and 50 cents for children.

Upper Class, Kidnappers, Phantom Gang, Ras Ting, Adem Rizz, Scatter Watta, Shawty P and Fresh Juice are some of the artistes who will perform at the fundraising gig.

Durban-based dance duo Distruction Boyz nearly shut down the Internet on Friday with the release of their highly-anticipated debut album Gqom is The Future‚ something that was all part of their master plan.

After giving people a reason to burn out dancefloors with their production on last year’s December anthem Wololo, the Distruction Boyz debut album has already won the hearts of many, launching the December fever.

“We were blown away with the response to the album, but it was really what we expected. It all went according to plan‚” the group’s Thobane ‘Que’ Mgobhozi said.

Gqom is The Future sees collaborative effort from some of the biggest musicians in the game, DJ Tira, Benny Maverick and even Babes Wodumo, their former label mate. Tracks to look out for include Omunye, Shut up and groove and Madness.

Mgobhozi (21) and Zipho ‘Gold’ Mthembu (20), are gqom DJs and producers from Kwa-Mashu who set the ambitious goal to become the first act to reach gold certification for a Gqom album. The youngsters have dictated Durban sound in the past year with their productions and have successfully made the Gqom music genre their own. Gqom is a genre of dance music popular in Durban‚ only made mainstream recently.

“We’ve only just released the physical copies of the album so it’s a little too early to tell how far we are from reaching gold, but we’ve no doubt that we’re going to go gold and even platinum. People love our music and our digital sales have been amazing. We are number one across the country‚” Que said.

Distruction Boys were instrumental in taking the genre out of the Durban townships to become the most exciting sound in the country‚ beating out hip-hop‚ afro-dancehall and reggae at the recent Red Bull Culture Clash. But it was not easy for the duo who had to convince artists‚ music bosses and even their parents to take a chance on them.

“My parents weren’t too happy about me wanting to do music because they’re academics, but I did what they wanted from me and finished school and now they don’t mind what I do. It’s not so bad now but we also used to get a lot of questions when we started out‚ like: ‘who are these guys and what are they doing?’ and ‘what is gqom?’ It was only after we started making music for other artists that things got easier‚” he said.

The group was discovered by Big Nuz’s Mampintsha who recruited them to work on Wololo, a track he was producing for Babes Wodumo.

“We were releasing music and he heard our songs. He gave us a call one random day and was like: ‘hey guys‚ this is Mampintsha. Please come through to the studio and work on something’. That is how we worked on Wololo.”

He said the track‚ which has become one of the most popular songs ever recorded in Mzansi‚ took just an hour to put together.

“In our arsenal‚ we have so many beats so it wasn’t too difficult to put a beat over the lyrics. After an hour it was done. We all knew that it would be a big song, but no one was expecting it to be that massive‚” he added. – TimesLive

Seven years after releasing smash hit, Zvangu Zvamuka, which took the local house music scene by storm, Kwabatsha dance group is at it once again as they have remade the popular track with the help of Durbanites, Big Nuz’s Mampintsha and West Ink’s DJ Thukzin to give it a Gqom touch.

The Gqom version of the track is featured on the group’s debut 13-track album Best of Batshi that was released recently. The album however, is made up of mostly Kwabatsha’s singles from their seven-year musical journey.

A member of the group, Trust Madosky said they had collaborated with the popular South African artistes to add flavour to their album in order to make it relevant to local house music fanatics.

“For this album, we wanted nothing but the best so we settled for the best in South Africa in the form of Mampintsha and Thukzn. Gqom music, a Durban sound is very popular so we hope that remaking Zvangu Zvamuka using this sound will resonate well with fans,” said Madosky.

He said, interestingly, Mampintsha and Thukzin were the ones who suggested that Zvangu Zvamuka be remade.

“I can’t believe we had to redo Zvangu Zvamuka after a request from Mampintsha and Thukzin who suggested that the track is popular in South Africa with DJs such as Kent using it on their sets. As a result, they said chances were high it’d be more popular with a Gqom sound so we agreed to redo it.”

On working with the SA house gurus, Madosky said: “We’re glad they didn’t turn us down when we approached them to assist as they worked well with us and gave us headers.”

Though most trending house tracks are either in Zulu or Ndebele, one thing that is fascinating about Kwabatsha’s new album is that most vocals are in Shona. The tracks have a familiar Zimbabwean sound fused with deep thumping bass and a bit of Mbira, showing the versatile nature of Kwabatsha.

Tracks to look out for include Ndoda Faro, Nyama Yekugocha, Pamagitare, Sithabile, Tamba and Zvakanaka.

The album is already available on Amazon, Google Play and Spotify with hard copies available on request.

“We’re working with an Italian company called Beat Machine which is distributing our album and collecting our royalties.

“Those who want the physical copies can contact me and we’ll deliver,” he said.

THE four-day European Union (EU) Film Festival kicked off at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo yesterday with the screening of an acclaimed assortment of films from across Europe.

Ambassador Philippe Van Damme, head of the EU delegation in Zimbabwe, said he was happy to bring the festival which was successfully held in Harare five months ago to Bulawayo, with the hope that the European movies will entertain the audience.

“We’re very excited to finally bring the festival to Bulawayo and some outstanding European movies that’ll entertain and touch the audience.

“Cinema, however, is not just about entertainment. It’s about the expression of identities, reflecting the state of a society and community. Our films are inspired by the core principles of Europe: unity in diversity; cultural, linguistic or even ethnic diversity; and unity of values, such as equality and democracy, as well as our social model,” said Van Damme.

Admission to all screenings is free.

This year’s selection of cinema presents film enthusiasts with vivid pictures of Europe’s societies in their all-encompassing facets and cultures, a wide scope of stories that engage and pay tribute to the common traits of human nature.

British Council office manager Melody Sango urged the Bulawayo community to come in their numbers as the film festival is open to everyone.
