How SA celebs are making thousands in minutes

South African celebrities have found new ways of making loads of money apart from their primary jobs by endorsing certain brands or events using the pulling power of their social media accounts.

This new trend, which can earn public personalities up to R100 000 in minutes for posting messages on Facebook and Twitter, among other social media vehicles, is known as “influencing”.

Generations: The Legacy actress Thando Thabethe said she charges her clients R10 000 per tweet as an influencer.

Thabethe who has over 300 000 followers on Twitter and a million followers on Instagram said: “When brands want me to post about their products, that means my followers will see the tweet and their followers will see the tweet, so the reach is greater.”

Socialite and TV presenter Khanyi Mbau said: “I weigh my options depending on how much I lose on other competitive brands. For instance, if it’s Outsurance approaching me, I’d charge them based on how much MiWay might have given me previously.”

Mbau said she is also conscious of what brands she aligns herself with as people associate brands with people.

“So, it has to be a brand I can be able to associate with. You can lose out while endorsing a certain product because of its reputation in the market. I charge between R10 000 and R15 000 per post.”

Metro FM DJ Lerato Kganyago said depending on the brand, she charges a minimum of R5 000 per tweet.

“Also, I charge depending on the platform I’m using to promote or relay a message on the campaign. I charge more on Instagram and Facebook. Facebook is number one in terms of greater reach with Instagram being number two. Twitter comes last because some people are not on the platform.”

Some celebrities said they just don’t take in everything that comes to them.

TV presenter Boitumelo “Boity” Thulo said she takes only campaigns that are in line with what she believes in.

“It’s about brand alignment, something I believe in,” said Thulo.

Thulo said she charges R60 000 for five tweets.

“And that R60 000 is way less than the attention the brand is getting. Imagine posting a tweet for 3.5million users, that’s massive. The brand would be charged way higher than what I charge if they go on TV,” she said.

She added that her public relations team use a special social media tool to gauge the performance of her posts.

“Sometimes, we even charge based on what that tool tells us. We look at the impressions, the number of retweets and shares in other social media platforms,” she said.

Some celebrities, however, have not embraced the new money-making trend. Veteran actress Rami Chuene said she has decided “for private reasons” to avoid posting on social media for money.

Actress Khanya Mkangisa said she would not talk about how much she charges in public.

“I’m not comfortable talking about that because to me that is like talking about my salary,” she said. — SundayWorld

Methembe ‘Oxide Junior’ Moyo

Langalakhe Mabena
THE apple does not fall far from the tree!

Born nine years ago to Desire Moyo, the Director of Victory Siyanqoba and actress-cum-dancer Esther Zitha, Methembe Moyo has proven to be a poetic gem who despite his age, has always kept the audience captivated owing to his prowess on the stage.

The young poet, who graced the opening ceremony of Bulawayo Arts Awards’ first edition this year, announced his arrival on the poetry scene courtesy of his poem titled Hhmn Ngiyasola.

As a result, the multitudes were stunned when the young star, fondly known as Oxide Junior, did justice to his set.

Unlike his father who is a protest poet, the Sigombe Primary School pupil is a gospel poet who recites ballads and sonnets which are a social commentary on goodwill focusing on Biblical issues and HIV/Aids.

Asked on how Methembe became a poet, his father, a former director of Missing Piece Performing Arts and Manama High School Drama Club, claimed the youngster discovered himself.

“Methembe discovered himself, every time he watched me perform he would say, ‘Dad I can do better than you’. One day his mother asked me to give him an opportunity to perform for the two of us. I almost cried when he recited my own poem like I penned it especially for him,” said Moyo who is also a teacher by profession.

The youngster’s talent was seemingly given a nod by renowned former Radio Two presenter Ezra Tshisa Sibanda who recorded Methembe’s performance and later on posted the video on his Facebook page.

The video has attracted over 15 000 views.

“Methembe is a gem, like they say the apple does not fall far away from its tree. With good guidance from his parents who are also into the arts, it is of no surprise that the youngster will become the next Albert Nyathi or even go beyond that”, said Sibanda.

To prove his talent, Methembe came out number three at Albert Nyathi’s Talent Search beating mature poets, some twice his age. He also came number five out of 22 competitors who took part in the National Aids Council Competition which was held last month in commemoration of the World Aids Day.

The young star is set to release a poetry album in December which will be launched at the Sepiso Sa Rona, an annual Human Rights Poetry Festival which will be held in Gwanda South.

FORMER Star FM producer/presenter Nonkululeko Vundla, popularly known as Blackbird or Temple, has released an EP with three tracks.

The album titled, Love Triangle, has love songs in three genres — hip-hop, R&B and gospel.

Having turned to God last year, Blackbird adopted the moniker, Temple. She said the new second name which she uses in Christian circles was in sync with her Christian beliefs.

For those people who love reggae, a love song titled Mirira will cater for their taste. DJ Smylie assisted her with the recording of the track.

“The reggae tune encourages distant lovers to remain faithful to each other and uphold the oath they made at the outset of their love. The song also advises distant lovers to focus on God as he is the keeper of their marriages,” said the former radio personality.

Christians will feast spiritually from the track Boaz that gives hope to those facing challenges.

“Boaz is an R&B song that caters for the young and old. I came up with the song so as to give hope to someone who’s going through a difficult situation.

“The song inspires one to focus on the Lord and not to be shaken by any challenges that he or she could be going through in life.”

Gangsta Papi, a hip-hop track is aimed at youths whom she wants to believe in God.

“There’re many ways to catch a fish. Gangsta Papi is used to minister to the young and old,” she said.

Temple, who has resided in South Africa and Zambia, said she will market her music locally and regionally.

“I’ll be using both of my brand names (Blackbird and Temple) because I want to reach out to believers and non-believers to promote my latest album. I’ll kick-start my promotional campaign here in Zimbabwe before taking the album to South Africa where I’ve established links after having resided there last year.”

The Dollar Rand Naira hit-maker who is currently based in Zambia said she would also promote the album there.

“I’m establishing links with musicians here in Zambia and I’ve since asked some of them to help promote my music. There’re some musicians who’ve asked to do collaborations with me and this will go a long way in making inroads in as far marketing the latest EP,” said Blackbird.

Speaking at a Press conference at The Vista yesterday, Skyz Metro FM station manager Godwin Phiri said the awards would be held on December 21 and this will see 18 musicians honoured in their respective categories at a red carpet event at a yet to be named venue in the city.

“On the awards night it’ll be a red carpet event where we want to honour and celebrate the musicians from the city who’ve worked hard throughout the year. The awards will have 18 categories that will be announced at a nominees’ party on November 24,” said Phiri.

The categories that will be contested will be Song of the Year, Best Male Artiste, Best Female Artiste, Best Gospel Song, Best Dance Song, Best Tshibilika Song, Best Imbube Song, Best Metro-Urban Song, Best Urban fire Song, Best Afro Soul Song, Best Maskandi/Mbaqanga Song, Best House/Gqom! Song, Best Collaborated Song, Best Song by a Group/Duo, Best Music Sound Production, Best Music Journalist (All Media), Best Break-Out Star and Most Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Phiri said the selection criteria would be for songs that were produced and released from September 11, 2016, the day the radio station started broadcasting and September 11, 2017, but they would consider those which were produced earlier.

“Music that first emerged through the Skyz Metro FM airwaves before September 11, 2016 will also be considered for nomination. In other words music released prior to September 11, 2016 but only evidently popularised by the advent of Skyz Metro FM will be considered,” he said.

The nomination process has begun with Phiri saying: “The general public will nominate nominees for all awards. They can get nomination papers filled physically from the Skyz Metro FM office or via call in on designated radio programme segments, nomination via online platforms afforded by the station.

He said a nomination committee of Skyz Metro FM presenters, producers and managers will sit and select nominees to contest each award.

The public will be able to vote in three categories namely Song of the Year, Best Male and Best Female Artiste.

“This will be done through a sealed ballot box located at Skyz Metro FM offices, Call-In voting on designated radio programme segments during shows, online voting via Skyz Metro website and social media platforms and SMS voting via prescribed voting lines,” said Phiri.”

Davido blow for Jah Prayzah- Fails to make it for album launch

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
AFRICAN hip hop star Davido yesterday failed to make it for Jah Prayzah’s Kutonga Kwaro album launch in Harare as he is embroiled in a murder case concerning his close friend Tagbo Umeike in Nigeria with police there questioning him over his involvement.

Davido, who was reportedly paid $90 000, was supposed to support Jah Prayzah who he did a collaboration with on the song My Lilly at the album launch pencilled for the Harare International Conference Centre.

Organisers of the show, 2 Kings Entertainment, issued a statement on Thursday night announcing that Davido would not be part of the album launch because of “circumstances beyond their control”.

Winky D and Oliver Mtukudzi were roped in to rescue the situation.

Events that happened on October 3 in Nigeria where Davido’s close confidant Umeike died in what police said was suffocation, have come back to haunt him. Umeike died on his birthday at a bar in Nigeria after allegedly taking 40 shots of Tequila. Two other close pals of the Nigerian muso, DJ Olu and Chime, died four days after the passing of Umeike with the hip hop superstar breaking the news on his Instagram handle last Saturday night.

DJ Olu, son to Nigerian billionaire Dapo Abiodun, and Chime, were reportedly found dead in the former’s car in unclear circumstances.

It seems Davido gave statements to the police that were laced with untruths.

According to The Vanguard newspaper, the police in Nigeria have concluded arrangements to transfer the case over the death of Davido’s friends to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID for further investigations.

Police sources revealed that Davido was allowed to go home after the interrogation, which lasted for some hours.

However, other suspects in the case were said to still be in police custody pending the completion of the process of transfer and other requirements that will aid detectives in their investigations.

It was also learned that Davido was advised to make himself available any time his attention was needed, a request he freely consented to.

So as of Thursday police were questioning Davido about the whole issue and this affected his appearance yesterday.

Meanwhile, Davido has broken his silence over the whole situation saying he was not responsible for his friends’ deaths.

Through Davido’s legal adviser, Norrison Quakers (SAN) published on The Punch Nigeria, the If hit-maker said he was never arrested by the police; rather he made himself available for questioning.

“Our client maintains that he has not in any way lied about what he knows about the unfortunate incident, neither has his statement to the police been incoherent as unfortunately being presented in the media”.

Davido also released CCTV footage from the Shisha lounge where he last saw the deceased before the tragic incident. — @bonganinkunzi

DJ Tira still has the Midas touch

DJ Tira

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
YEARS and years of producing and performing hits have honed the skills of DJ Tira and made him an accomplished artiste and this showed on Friday night during his show at Club Connect in Bulawayo.

The Afrotainment boss, who turned 40 in August, had the place pumping for a good three hours keeping the packed nightspot vibing to house hits.

It has been a year since Tira performed in Bulawayo (at the Kalawa Homecoming) and a long time since he did so in a nightclub and on Friday he showed that he still knows what is needed to get a party going.

All throughout the week, the buzz around the city was all roads lead to the DJ Tira show and when he landed and posted the pictures with his new artiste TipCee many could not wait for the night.

Before sound check DJ Tira popped in at Nust and there was commotion at the campus as students jostled to take pictures of the famous SA DJ. Lectures came to a brief halt, as lecturers also wanted in on the action whipping out their phones and taking selfies with DJ Tira.

Malume as Tira is known these days, expressed gratitude for the love he was shown in Zimbabwe posting an appreciative message on his Twitter. This was just a tip of the iceberg of more things to come on the night.

When DJ Tira took to the decks at around 12.30AM, the party atmosphere in the club went up a notch, with piercing screams from female revellers and loud howls from their male counterparts.

Thereafter Dj Tira started the job of entertaining the revellers and belted out tunes from his stable, Afrotainment, from yester year hits such as Big Nuz’s Happy song and Umlilo, DJ Clock’s Umahamba Yedwa, to recent Uzophuzamanzi by Distruction Boyz.

His playlist was mostly Durban House and most specifically from Afrotainment showing off the long list of hit songs the stable has 10 years after he opened its studios in Durban.

Befittingly, DJ Tira played songs from his first artiste, DJ Cndo, such as Amerido before he switched up to Terminator.

He sampled tracks from the Afro Summer 2017 album from his stable such as Malume and the reaction from the crowd prompted DJ Tira to introduce his latest artiste, TipCee, a pint sized bundle of energy on stage.

Described as SA’s rookie of the year, TipCee features on four of the biggest dance songs in that country such as Amadada by DJ Gukwa, Malume by Dj Tira, Madness with Distruction Boyz and Isicathulo which features Busiswa and Dj Tira – a song of the year contender.

Giving the decks to a member of his entourage, Tira held TipCee’s hands as he introduced her to the Bulawayo crowd who cheered her on as the live wire did the Vosho dance countless times in her bid to impress.

In the crowd there were clusters of self-proclaimed top dancers dotted around the venue as they showed off the Vosho and Bhenga, dances that are associated with the new brand of house music called Gqom. Those who couldn’t match the dancer moves stood by the side and watched in glee, while downing the assorted intoxicating drinks on offer in the club.

What DJ Tira has mastered is to keep the club buzzing using the mic to interact with fans in-between giving out chants for the crowd to repeat.

The party mood in the general area was the same in the VIP section as the who’s who of Bulawayo watched DJ Tira from the balcony in the club, with others just in front of him, asking for a selfie or two, of which he obliged.

At 3.30AM Tira asked the crowd if they were tired and the general consensus was they were not, which was a cue for others to head home.

DJ Tira continued until the wee hours of the night, marking the end of an epic night for fun seekers and lovers from the City of Kings.— @bonganinkunzi .

Jah Prayzah with his wife at the launch

Jah Prayzah with his wife at the launch

Melissa Mpofu (in Harare)
WHEN it was announced that Nigerian artiste, Davido, would not make it to Harare for Jah Prayzah’s Kutonga Kwaro album launch, some people thought the event at HICC on Friday would flop as they believed the multi-award winning musician was the drawcard.

But, from the first act up until the last, the momentum kept rising and not for a single moment was Davido’s absence felt. Jah Prayzah proved why he was one of the best artistes in the country as he gave music promoters and show-goers all the reasons to invest more and believe in local artistes as he, with the help of Winky D, Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi, ExQ, Andy Muridzo and Jah Signal staged a flawless event. Their energetic performances undeniably satisfied music lovers. Also making the night memorable was Zambia’s Mampi of the “Why” fame who was a surprise act.

Usually, as has become the norm, revellers are often spotted trickling out of the venue while other artistes will still be performing, but at the album launch, this was not the case as people danced the night away, supporting all artistes who performed and only leaving their seats to refill their glasses or relieve themselves. Instead of people leaving, more kept making their way to the HICC to witness the best album launch this year.

The sold out event was well organised with security details clearly having a good day in office as there was no commotion in and outside the HICC. No dogs were in sight as it was orderly at the venue’s entrance points.

News that Davido who is in police custody in Nigeria following the mysterious death of three of his friends, had to abruptly cancel his trip to Harare seemed to have been accepted by show attendees who did not fuss. Kudos goes to event organisers – 2 Kings Entertainment for handling the issue well as they quickly came up with measures to ensure that the show would go on well. They communicated that ticket prices had been slashed by 50%, a move that likely also contributed to the rise in ticket sales whose uptake was low earlier in the week owing to the steep ticket pricing.

“If you had bought a $20 ordinary ticket you can now bring a plus one or get coupons worth $10 for drinks or snacks. If you had bought your ticket for Davido, hold on to it because a compensatory gig featuring the Nigerian star is being organised for later,” were some of the measures taken by 2 Kings Entertainment to deal with the crisis.

But, while revellers seemed to have accepted that Davido was not on the line-up, the main performer – Jah Prayzah was not in his usual form. He did not seem too excited, something which affected his performance which at some stages was rather lukewarm. However, this anomaly was quickly rectified by Winky D and Tuku who were added onto the line-up at the last hour to replace Davido. As if to show music promoters that the country did not need to spend a lot of money on bringing international artistes, the two went all out and definitely brought the house down. Tuku wowed people with his dance moves while Winky D effortlessly won the hearts of many in the auditorium with his dancehall tunes.

Guest of honour, Wicknell Chivayo also cheered Jah Prayzah up by buying a copy of the new album for $10 000. He also extended his gratitude to Jah Prayzah’s wife Rufaro whom he invited to the stage to give her a $2 000 token of appreciation for taking care of the lanky artiste.

With the help of his band, Jah Prayzah took time to perform some of Davido’s popular tracks such as If as well as their collaboration – My Lilly.

A music video for a track Nziyo Yerudo in which he collaborated with another popular Nigerian artiste – Yemi Alade was also released at the launch and played for the audience. Shot in Soweto, South Africa, the music video and song has all the ingredients of a great love song. With this track, Jah Prayzah is slowly charming his way into West Africa featuring a songbird who has already achieved the feat with her hot single Johnny already sitting on over 77 million views on YouTube.

To tease fans, Jah Prayzah performed a few songs from the new offing – advising followers to buy copies of the album to listen to the other tracks. Adhere they did because just after the event, most people bought copies of the new album. And in no time, most vehicles were playing his music.

The album produced by DJ Tamuka is a masterpiece and has two collaborations – the one with Yemi Alade and another one Poporipopo with Diamond Platinumz whom he also featured on his previous album. The track most impatiently waited to hear was Kutonga Kwaro which has been said to be a political track. When Jah Prayzah performed the track, there was silence as people clearly wanted to hear the lyrics.

Over and above, the album which mostly has love songs will likely be a hit as it has diverse sounds – some modern to cater for his international market which he is targeting and others traditional for his local market.

Danisa Masuku, Showbiz Correspondent
Up-and-coming gospel musician Natsisai Taaliah Mudzamiri launched her debut album ‘Spirit of the Lord’ at Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Hall last Saturday in Bulawayo.

The launch included an auction that saw one copy go for $200. Those who want the CD can grab a copy for $1 at Eagle Life Assembly Church in the city.

Scores of church members graced the venue in support of one of their own who was ably supported by controversial gospel muso Fungisai Zvakavapano- Mashavave.

‘Taaliah’ took to the stage after Fungisai and wowed the crowd leaving many convinced that she is worth supporting. Her onstage debut began with a rendition of the track Mwari Wemasimba Ose which got Prophet Blessing Chiza onto his feet and joined the crowd in worship.

Mudzamiri followed up with the track Haakusiye wega closing the show with the track – Glory to Glory.

The up-and-coming gospel artiste paid tribute to her idol, Fungisai. “I feel honoured and inspired by your presence sis Fungisai. Thanks for the tips and advice and these are the results,” she said.

Mudzamiri revealed that she has already started working on a video of the album which is set to be released in December.

The man who ‘discovered’ her talent, Prophet Chiza said:

“I’m happy that you obliged the prophecy. She worked in our cleaning department, but during one of the church services, God spoke to me and told me about her talent as a singer. In the prophesy I saw a number of albums that she is yet to produce. Let me quickly say if she adheres to God’s commandments, she has what it takes to become be a great musician and a great influence too in the society.”

Meanwhile, the guest artist and Mudzamiri’s mentor, Fungisai put up an inspired performance. Despite her controversial revelation about secular music, Eagle Life Church members and other invited guests seemed to be enjoying her set and even sang along to her hit –Ndokubasa Kwenyu. Her band members skilfully supported her with their exquisite dance skills and melodious vocals putting colour to her singing.

Thembani Mubochwa fits out Jah Prayzah recently

Thembani Mubochwa fits out Jah Prayzah recently

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
AWARD winning designer Thembani Mubochwa has added another feather to his cap as he is now designing outfits for Jah Prayzah for performances and red carpet events, one of which he wore during his album launch in Harare on Friday.

During the album launch, Jah Prayzah wore a silver-grey sleeveless suit with a matching tight fitting shirt that had chains along the sleeves as a detailing during his performance. Mubochwa, who was based in Durban, South Africa, has tailored outfits for the late Sfiso Ncwane and some of Mzansi’s A list celebrities, through his fashion house TMZ.

Now that he is based fulltime in Zimbabwe, Mubochwa believes the time is ripe to expand his brand and what better way to do so than with Jah Prayzah.

“Over the years in South Africa, I worked with a number of celebrities on their image for both performances and appearances.
I’m excited that I have already started on a high note working on the Jah Prayzah brand. I’m, working on Jah’s performing costumes on stage,” said Mubochwa.

Describing the outfit that Jah Prayzah wore on Friday night, Mubochwa said the inspiration behind the outfit was the singer’s journey in music as he was now targeting the continental and international market.

He said Jah Prayzah was part of the designing of the outfit.

“Jah was very much involved in designing the concept of the costume blazer for the stage. He came up with the concept of the detail he wanted on the sleeves of the jacket. As a designer I had to work out what he wanted but of course with my signature of zips,” said Mubochwa.

He said it was high time Zimbabwe celebrities become trendsetters.

“We want to see our own Zimbabwean celebrities taking their position in the fashion industry by setting not following trends,” said Mubochwa.

Jah Prayzah has been found wanting a couple of times on the red carpet with outfits that have been described as misses by fashion critics.

With the coming in of Mubochwa it is hoped that in the next red carpet event, Jah Prayzah will light it up with a dazzling outfit.

This partnership with Jah Prayzah is part of Mubochwa’s focus on establishing a TMZ fashion studio in Zimbabwe.

“Last year my focus was establishing my trust fund for Zimbabwean elephants and now I’m focusing on establishing my fashion brand. I want to structure my local studio the way I structured my Durban one.”

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
SOUTH African comedian Donovan Goliath will share the stage with Zimbabwe’s finest, Clive Chigubhu, Q Dube and Mandla Da Comedian during the Headliners Comedy Night in Bulawayo next month.

Donovan, who is a presenter on the magazine programme Real Goboza on SABC 1 and features frequently on Comedy Central shows in South Africa, will perform at the Bulawayo Theatre on November 11.

This will be a litmus test for Q Dube as this is his first comedy show organised by him and the award winning comic said he was excited at bringing Donovan to Bulawayo.

“It’s going to be amazing because there is already a buzz about the show. The line up we feel is solid and the comics are excited. What Donovan Goliath brings to the table can only be witnessed and not explained or described. One needs to watch him live to understand,” said Q Dube.

He said Chigubhu and Mandla were chosen by him as their comedic style complemented Donovan.

“The comics have to complement each other and on paper Clive Chigubhu and Mandla Da Comedian were the best bet to suit Donovan’s style. The boys themselves are ridiculously funny and it’s time they showed that to their home fans while sharing the stage with a big act,” said Q Dube.

The Harare based Q Dube said the show was an opportunity for him to promote shows in his home city.

Q Dube

Q Dube

“I’m a Bulawayan and being based in Harare I’ve always wanted to give back but didn’t know how. I feel promoting shows in Bulawayo is the best way to do so because for the longest time every major comic show has been in Harare. Bulawayo has proved its love for comedy by attending shows with local comics only, so I thought to bring a different flavour. 80 percent of all shows I shall be doing shall be in Bulawayo,” said Q Dube.

He said more shows are coming to Bulawayo to help develop comedy in the city.

“The idea with bringing shows to Bulawayo is to give its comics a chance to perform with regional acts without having to wait for Harare based festivals to book them once a year. Going forward the line ups change from show to show. We already have two more shows booked but those shall be for next year,” said Q Dube.

After people laugh themselves senseless there will be an after party at Club Eden so that they reflect on the jokes and meet the comedians. Entrance to the show will be pegged at $10 for ordinary tickets and $15 VIP.

Davido’s ‘lies’ aroused police suspicion

THE Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, has explained why the police transferred the case file of the hip-hop star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, to outstate Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Yaba in Lagos.

Speaking on Channels Television Breakfast Show, Sunrise on Monday, Imohimi said Davido’s actions called for suspicion.

“I asked Davido that, ‘When you left that bar, did you have anything again to do with the deceased?’ What he said was that he was only informed by mutual friends in some other bar that the deceased had died and I took his word for it.

“I called for further investigations, pulled the CCTV cameras from the general hospital, only to discover that it was Davido’s escort Hilux van, his driver and friends that brought a lifeless Tagbo Umeike (the deceased), dumped in the hospital and then fled the scene.”

Imohimi said the response by Davido raises suspicion and that is what is being investigated by the police.

“That raises curiosity and of course, that’s what we are investigating, and that was why I ordered that the matter be moved to outstate CID at Yaba for proper investigation and of course, we will duplicate the case file and forward to DPP, Ministry of Justice for legal advise,” Imohimi said.

He said he believed Davido’s initial statement that he was only informed by mutual friends about Tagbo’s death and even told actress, Caroline Danjuma to be careful about what she posts on social media. Danjuma had accused Davido of being involved in the demise of the former.

“When actress Caroline Danjuma posted on Instagram that Tagbo Umeike was in the company of the pop-star and friends when he died, saying she suspects foul play, I was forced to call all parties involved to my conference room as a kind of pre-investigation fact-finding.

“I asked questions and remember telling Caroline Danjuma that ‘Look you don’t go on your Instagram page without verifying facts because a person’s reputation is concerned’.”

The acting commissioner of Police in Lagos, however, said that the police is not speculating and the investigation into the case is based on facts.

Meanwhile, Davido says he has forgiven those who accused him of complicity in the death of his friend, Tagbo.

Writing on Snapchat, the Fall hit-maker said it is time to move on and get back to music. — Online.

Magistrate Baloyi detailed testimony from the victim that she was bleeding after the incident as her hymen was broken, as she was a virgin at the time, and was in severe pain.

Kwaito star Sipho Ndlovu, popularly known as Brickz, was yesterday sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of raping a 17 year old relative in 2013.

In his ruling Magistrate Baloyi detailed testimony from the victim that she was bleeding after the incident as her hymen was broken, as she was a virgin at the time, and was in severe pain.

Baloyi said the victim had been told by Brickz to take a bath after the rape and he had threatened to kill her if she told anyone. He also said the victim was unaware that she had been infected with a sexually transmitted disease.

The victim said she wanted to end her life as a result of the trauma and became fearful of the musician.

“She was very scared of the accused. As he was raping her, he threatened to kill her if she were to tell his wife about the incident. This resulted in the complainant bottling up, not telling anyone about it,” detailed Baloyi.

The defence argued for a lenient sentence, but Baloyi said Brickz has not shown remorse for his crime and the court has a duty to protect the freedom of women.

Baloyi commended Ndlovu’s wife who is the complainant in the matter for showing the victim unwavering support.

Wearing grey pants, a white shirt and a blue jersey, Brickz was all smiles as he walked into court to hear his fate.

He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial and has repeatedly said “the truth will come out.”

Brickz’ legal team immediately said it would be appealing the conviction as well as the sentence. —TimesLive

SKYZ Metro FM has responded swiftly to calls from the hip hop fraternity to include their genre at the radio station’s inaugural awards slated for December 21 in Bulawayo.

When the station released categories for the awards last Friday at The Vista in Bulawayo, hip hop artistes noticed that their genre had not been included on the 18 categories. This sparked a protracted debate and lobbying by some hip hop artistes who questioned the reasoning behind the decision.

Their argument was that the genre was key as it has produced a number of songs which are dominating the station’s top 20 chart show. The station also has a hip hop chart show – Rapperholix.

Skyz Metro FM station manager Godwin Phiri on Monday announced the station had heeded the artistes’ calls and decided to include a hip hop category for Best Hip Hop Song.

“There has been a heated and welcome debate concerning the absence of a specific Hip Hop Award from the upcoming Skyz Metro FM Awards.

“We wish to advise that after carefully listening to many voices from a diverse range of stakeholders and in keeping with our identity as Istitshi Sabantu, we’ve made the decision to add a Best Hip Hop Song award to the 18 already lined up. We hope that this will address valid concerns raised by many of the stakeholders that we interact with,” said Phiri.

He said the genre was not left out in the first place, but fell under the Urban Metro Song category.

“It (Hip Hop) hadn’t been excluded. We’d created an award called Best Metro Urban Song which basically catered for hip hop, Kasi Rap and Trap etc. There have been debates on what Hip Hop is and various offshoots so that award was meant to cater for all the different views.”

Other categories are Song of the Year, Best Male Artist, Best Female Artiste, Best Gospel Song, Best Dance Song, Best Tshibilika Song, Best Imbube Song, Best Metro-Urban Song, Best Urban fire Song, Best Afro Soul Song, Best Masgandi/Mbaqanga Song, Best House/Gqom Song, Best Collaborated Song, Best Song by a Group/Duo, Best Music Sound Production, Best Music Journalist, Best Break-Out Star and Most Outstanding Contribution to Music.

Entrants will be nominated by the public.

AFTER a social media war that got people talking, musician Khuliyo (real name Nkululeko Nkala) and radio personality/MC Babongile Sikhonjwa will take their battle to the stage as they square off in a winner takes all singing contest.

Bulawayo Theatre will be the battle ground during the Khuliyo vs Sikhonjwa So You Think You Can Sing competition on October 27.

Entrance has been pegged at $3 for advance tickets with a $5 fee on the day of the show. The two will be judged by the audience who will vote through ballot papers which they will be given upon entry.

The competition is a result of a spat which began last Friday when Sikhonjwa attacked Khuliyo on Twitter saying his music was terrible. Sikhonjwa was retaliating after having been informed that Khuliyo was sabotaging him by telling people who wanted his MC services that Sikhonjwa was bad at that job.

He also responded to Khuliyo saying he was a better singer. Khuliyo shot back at Sikhonjwa saying he was a bad presenter who did not know anything about singing.

Khuliyo then suggested that the two square off publicly. Both artistes were confident ahead of the battle next week.

“It’s easy money for me and I’ll win by a mile. It’s impossible for me to lose. Nku came up with the challenge and I said let’s do it. If this will bring everything to peace, then let’s do it,” said Sikhonjwa.

Said Khuliyo: “Babongile has a big mouth and someone needs to shut him up. He can barely hold a note.”

However, some people took the spat on social media as a mere publicity stunt that was supposed to give attention to the artistes.

The two naturally said the battle was not stage managed.

“How can it be staged when I’m willing to risk my brand and say bad things on Facebook?” said Sikhonjwa.

Khuliyo weighed in and said: “The funny thing is that before the poster came out, people didn’t think it was stage managed, but now that there’s a poster and a fee, they’re saying it’s stage managed.

“I pulled down all my posts because I was angry and they were hurtful to both our brands. We however, can’t take back what we said on that day.”

DJ Tira with fans in Bulawayo recently

Bongani Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
SOUTH Africa’s DJ Tira, who recently had a health scare, says he has been reckless by not giving his body enough rest, something he has since corrected as he is no longer overburdening himself.

The Durbanite, who was in Bulawayo at the weekend, collapsed at his home four months ago after the Durban July where he had a hectic schedule, and had to be rushed to hospital.

Ever since that incident, the DJ is now taking things one step at a time and has since slowed down on his schedule.

During his performance at Club Connect in Bulawayo, the DJ showed that he had fully recovered as he effortlessly held a three-hour set without breaking a sweat.

The next day, he flew out to Pietermaritzburg, beginning the tour of the Afrotainment Summer 2017 album.

“It (collapsing) showed that I was a little bit careless. During the Durban July, I had to work too hard in order for both Fact Durban Rocks and the Afrotainment marquees to be a success. Unfortunately, I pushed myself too much as I had back to back events, resulting in me collapsing, but I’m ok now,” said a jovial DJ Tira.

“I know where to draw the line now and my wife is helping me to ensure that I don’t strain myself.”

Turning to his career, DJ Tira, who runs the successful Afrotainment music stable, said he was particularly proud of new entrants, TipCee and Zodwa Wabantu.

“I didn’t think I’d have Zodwa Wabantu as part of Afrotainment and the biggest artiste there. She just adds that zing to the stable. I came here with TipCee, a person that I recently started working with and I must admit that she’s doing well for herself.

“So many of us dream of becoming superstars and the best we can be, but at the same time, people don’t know how hard it is to get there,” said DJ Tira.

Asked if Big Nuz, one of the first groups to be signed to Afrotainment, was still with the label, DJ Tira said: “It’s not something that I should talk about so I can’t say much about it right now, but I think what people are seeing is exactly what it is”.

Big Nuz’s Mampintsha, who has gone solo, recently set up West Ink, a record label which is fronted by his girlfriend, Babes Wodumo.

Siyabonga dusts off flop album

Given Siyabonga

Danisa Masuku, Showbiz Correspondent
Up-and-coming gospel musician Given Siyabonga whose first album – Stepping Up – failed to make an impact has given it another try by releasing a second album which he has named Stepping Up Two.

With 13 songs, the album that was released on Sunday is being sold for $2 at Kingdom Life Ministries International – a church where the artiste fellowships.

Siyabonga said the first album did not perform well likely because of the lack of funds to market it.

“When I released the first album, I didn’t perform much, something which probably killed its visibility. I only held shows at churches and that was not enough to promote it.

“As such, I recorded low sales and with that, I can safely say I made a huge loss,” he said.

On the new album, the artiste has corrected his mistakes and has gone all out as he wants it to outperform the first one released in January this year.

He said he spent six months in the studio working on the fresh album that was produced by Neshville from Keyness Records. From time to time, he has been performing at key locations around the Bulawayo C.B.D such as the eGodini bus terminus and markets which are always a hive of activity.

“After releasing my first album that didn’t perform well, I learnt that this industry is not for chancers and had to dedicate a lot of time and money to perfect my latest album.

“Rushing to produce a half baked album or single doesn’t pay but is costly as you’ll realise that you’ll have wasted a lot of money and resources,” he said.

He said one of the tracks, Bambelela, off the new album, inspires people never to lose hope and believe in the Lord at all times, despite the challenges that they face.

A Cry for Restoration is a dedication to Zimbabweans as it gives them hope that God will resuscitate the economy.

Ngcwele is a praise song that inspires people to always keep praising the Lord in good and bad times while Wadiwa Mamo is a love song.

After realising that domestic football has been marred by violence, Siyabonga composed a track Stop Violence to warn football lovers to shun violence. The song also encourages football fans to tolerate each other.

The artiste said songs such as Ngcwele, Wadiwa Mamo and Tudiki have been playing popular at promotional tours around the city, giving him hope that this time around, his album will likely strike the right chord with fans.

Not slowing down, Siyabonga is now working on a DVD for the album which he hopes to release next month.

Marabini urged people to support the event which he hopes to make an annual event. Security measures have been put in place to ensure that cars will be safeguarded as well as revellers.

“We’ve called on the services of ZRP and a private security company to provide security for show attendees. Those attending the festival are rest assured that they’ll be safe,” he said.

Speaking ahead of the event, Madlela S’khobokhobo of the Ngamnanka uSaMamo fame said he was supporting Jeys’ noble cause and was raring to go.

The voice of the miners: YaFM celebrates two years

Minister Joram Gumbo

Bruce Ndlovu, Showbiz Correspondent
TWO years after it made its debut on the airwaves, Zvishavane based commercial radio station, YaFM, has managed to live up to its promise of being the voice of mining communities along the Great Dyke.

This was the observation made by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister and Mberengwa West Constituency Member of Parliament, Joram Gumbo, while he was addressing delegates who gathered in Mberengwa for the station’s second anniversary celebrations recently.

Gumbo said the commitment to give the miners a voice that spoke to and about them was made by the founders of YaFM two years ago, as they pledged to give a rich and rewarding radio experience to the people of the mineral rich region known as the Great Dyke.

“There was a pledge that the radio station would be a true representative of the people of this region and not a camouflage for some sinister motives by those who wish to see us divided.

“I am most gratified that as of now, YaFM has lived up to this promise. Our hope is that this will continue into the future,” said Gumbo.

As the miner’s voice, the station has been earmarked to spearhead gold mobilisation efforts, a move hailed by various stakeholders.

“I recently advised that they bring a team from the country’s primary gold buyer Fidelity Printers and Refiners to speak to the people of our region about the new incentives available to our small scale miners. I’m told in a few weeks’ time they’ll be joining Fidelity on various road shows targeting Zvishavane, Mberengwa, Filabusi and Gwanda among other places,” said Gumbo.

He went on to urge business people in the region to support the station saying without the support of the local businesses, chances are the station will struggle to fulfil its mandate and may never live up to its full potential.

In times of economic distress, Gumbo said, some businesses choose to remain anonymous and yet research has shown that entities that shy away from advertising die a slow and painful death. “You are thus encouraged to advertise and be known whatever the times. If the problem is about advertising rates, surely these can be discussed. Our intention as Government is to see business in this region growing to become not only competitive nationally but joining those that export products to other countries. God gave us the land and minerals which we are obliged to utilise,” Gumbo said.

The Minister described YaFM as a development oriented station that has assisted the community in times of need by sharing relevant information.

YaFM chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere expressed his appreciation to the local chiefs, advertisers and the general community for embracing the station and supporting it as the first regional commercial broadcaster to operate in Zimbabwe.

He said the latest ZAMPS survey has shown YaFM to be a leading station in Masvingo and Midlands provinces.

“It is our desire to increase our coverage in areas within our vicinity particularly the peripheral regions of Mberengwa. We do not see ourselves as a Zvishavane radio station but a voice of miners across the Great Dyke,” said Hwengwere.
