Toni Braxton was last week hospitalised in Atlanta due to complications related to her battle with lupus.

The 48-year-old Grammy award winning artiste was however discharged on Monday and is now resting at home.

“She was not in serious condition though Lupus is a serious disease and must be monitored at all times,” said her spokesperson.

TMZ reported that Braxton was in hospital for four days, noting that it was unclear whether she checked herself in or was transported by an ambulance.

Braxton’s boyfriend, rapper Birdman, reportedly boarded a plane from Texas to Atlanta when he heard the news.

The Un-break My Heart hit-maker first revealed she had lupus in 2010, when she accepted the Women In Achievement Award from Lupus LA.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissue and organs. Approximately 1.5 million Americans have a form of the disease, according to the Lupus Foundation of America.

“Take a look,” she said. “This is what lupus looks like.”

In 2012, the Grammy Award winner spoke to HuffPost Live about living with the disease, saying, “Some days I can’t balance it all.”

“Pretty much when you have lupus, you feel like you have the flu every day. But some days you get through it. But for me, if I’m not feeling well, I tend to tell my kids, ‘Oh, mommy’s just going to relax in bed today.’ I kind of take it easy.”

The hardest part about living with lupus, she said, was when she has to perform.

“So often, when it’s like that, it’s a lot of, ‘You sing!’ to the audience, you know?” she said. They kind of help me out a little bit without realising it.” —HuffingtonPost
